ASU Tourism Center Taps Business Sector in Research Venture

Arizona State University and its School of Community Resources and Development is launching a multidisciplinary tourism center this week.

Called the Megapolitan Tourism Research Center, it will be located at ASU's downtown campus under the leadership of Professor Tim Tyrrell, a tourism economist and member of ASU's School of Community Resources and Development.

The center is intended to connect members of the public and private sector, and conduct research into tourism's role as a source for social change and economic improvement.

A formal launch will be held Friday night at the Arizona Club, 201 N. Central Ave., with Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon among officials leading the invitation-only program.

The center identified key tourism leaders who will help shape its efforts as members of its Community Leadership Council: Joe Cole, director, National Investor Relations Institution Arizona Chapter; Pam Del Duca, president and CEO, Delstar Cos. Inc.; Ted A. Ferris, president and CEO, Arizona Sports & Tourism Authority; Barbara Garganta, regional manager, Anthropologie; AnnDee Johnson, director of research and strategic planning, Arizona Office of Tourism; Dan Postal, president, Wentworth Webb and Postal LLC; David Rauch, partner, Snell & Wilmer LLP; Judy Reinke, marketing manager, Regional Marketing Office, Southwest Airlines; Rachel Sacco, president and CEO, Scottsdale Convention and Visitors Bureau; Lauren Simons, marketing director, Scottsdale Convention and Visitors Bureau; Michael A. Uehara, president and managing director, King Pacific Lodge; and Cady Wolf, vice president of partner marketing, Travelocity/Western U.S., Canada and Hawaii.
